Figure 12. The Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens)
is the characteristic frigatebird of tropical seashores in the western
hemisphere, and nests on remote islands like Fernando de Noronha. Frigatebirds use their superior abilities of flight to catch flying fish,
snatch fish, squid, jellyfish and plankton off the surface of ocean waters, and
to steal prey caught by other seabirds. Sadly, the only population of
this species that nests near Africa (in the Cape Verde Islands), is almost
extinct because of persecution by fisherman. Photograph taken on
