was domesticated from the African Wild Ass (Equus asinus), which is
native to the deserts of north Africa. Because this species is adapted to
living in deserts, it is a favorite beast of burden in arid lands around the world. Donkeys are
also popular with children and are frequently seen in children's zoos and
